How Does An Over Thermometer Work?

For both professional chefs and mothers who cook for their family, it is a must to have an oven thermometer. Just like having pans and other cooking materials, it enables you to function more effectively and efficiently in the kitchen. More than the taste of the food, perhaps every chef and cooking mom’s concern is the health of the person who will eat the food. Naturally, it must be clean and free from all sorts of harmful bacteria. One great way to ensure that is by using an oven thermometer. By being aware of the temperature of whatever it is that you are cooking, you will be able to tell if the heat is enough to kill all the bacteria, making the food safe for consumption.

The question now is how it works. It is fairly simple. Here are the steps on how to go about using it, depending on what kind of food that you are cooking. But first, it is vital for you to check if it is working in the first place. Hence, you must test it in boiling water by placing the thermometer 2 inches into the boiling water. If it is accurate, it should measure 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Otherwise, you must adjust the knob by simply turning the dial until it reads 212 degrees Fahrenheit. By doing so, you have just recalibrated it so that the readings will be accurate.

Now, you are ready to check the temperature of the food you are cooking. If it is poultry that you intend to have for lunch or dinner, you must check the temperature by placing the thermometer in the inner part of the thigh. Go as close to the breast as possible. It must not touch any bone though because the reading would not be accurate. Now if what are on the menu are beef, ham, pork, veal, roasts, ground meat or poultry, make sure to place it near the middle, right where the thickest part is. Just like the bone, you must avoid the fatty area because it would not give you an accurate reading of the temperature. If you are cooking food that is lean such as hamburger patties, then the trick is to insert the thermometer sideways for you to get accurate temperature.

As a chef or a cooking mom, you must be aware of the 2 types of oven thermometers that you can buy. There is the oven proof and the instant read models. If you choose an oven proof type, you can place it any time and the temperature will rise as the food cooks. If you are using an instant read type, however, you have to remove the food from the oven and then slowly place the thermometer for 2 inches into the deepest part. To get the most accurate results, you must leave it there for 15 minutes.
